Managing Your StressMarch 19, 2009
What could possibly be more stressful than an audition that is going to offer you a lucrative job that pays your bills for the next month?? Not a great deal will make you sweat, forget the lines you've learned and turn five shades of white than the thought of losing a job that you truly want or need, yet that kind of stress, that kind of anxiety, isn't going to help you achieve the position that you want.
How do you manage it, keep the stress working for you instead of against you?
First of all we need to recognize stress for what it is. Without it, we'd be unable to react to situations in a rapid way, and the stimulation that we require to both act and to think quickly would be gone.
Every situation that is new to us creates some level of stress and that's something that we can't control, but we can fortunately control how we react to the stressors in our lives, whether those stressors are that big audition or the rejection slips. Identifying those things that stress us out is of course one of the ways we can learn to control our reaction to them.
There are several great books on identifying the areas that are creating stress for us and learning why... The best way of course to deal with stressors is to take them away, but if you're seeking the next big break or the next big television audition, then it's apparent that you can't eliminate the stress from your life.
The best bet for you is to learn to manage it, so that it doesn't show for the world to view or to hamper your own goals or career.
The best way to deal with stressors is to eliminate them. For instance, if you discovered you had an allergy to wool, you would stop wearing it, and your stress would disappear. However, in many cases, eliminating the stressor from your life is impossible. All you can do is manage the stress by using a stress management technique.
The best management for stress that is situational are those which can take place on the spot, as quickly as you feel your stress level begin to rise..
Some of the techniques you can use for this include a personal mantra, deep breathing, or a relaxation technique such as guided imagery that you could use on the spot, while waiting for your turn to audition.
Another good method for controlling stress is to refocus your energies on what you're about to do...
The way that stress will affect you will depend a very great deal on how you look at it overall. You can by learning a few simple techniques turn your stress from debilitating, into exhilarating stress, which will make it a wonderful challenge instead of a dreaded ordeal, using the stress to help you be sharp and do your best. To use or learn some of the techniques above, search out good books on stress management and get a handle on your stress, before it takes control of you.
Another word of advice:
When your stress levels are high, pay special attention to your nutrition and the amount of sleep you get. Make sure that both are adequate to keep you in peak condition.
